Love Lobster?
Love to dive a night?
Come join us this weekend as all of us at Catalina Divers Supply celebrate the opening of the California Spiny Lobster Season!
We have the Scuba Cat ready to go for night dives and we invite you to grab your gear, hop on the ferry and come on out to join us! Roger, Mike and the rest of the crew will be on hand and in the water to dive with you and your group of friends for this amazing diving season kickoff!
The leeward side of Santa Catalina Island cannot be legally trapped. For those who love lobster and love to dive, that means thrills and adventures await you! The conditions of the water are such that over the years, Catalina Island has been known to produce lobsters that were 3 to 5 lbs each!
Back in the days before divers went down to pick them by hand, spiny lobsters often grew to be 150 years old and over 1 m (3ft) long. These giant spiny lobsters were too big to fit into any traps, and had very few predators.
Most spiny lobsters now grow to the age of five to seven years before being caught. The largest on record was 16 pounds, 1 ounce, caught at Catalina Island in 1968 by Jim Watt on Scuba gear, according to the California Department of Fish and Game records

We have not seen a 16 lb lobster in a while here- but we’re ready to looking for those big Bugs!
The season lasts through March, but some of the best catches happen over the next few weeks. Come on over with us and let’s go have some fun!
